The Seven Steps of a Strong Safety Improvement Process
As an in-house safety compliance manager, you are no doubt always looking for best practices in site safety compliance and management. Reading and learning more about what other companies are doing in the site safety space. Investigating advice from a variety of safety consultants.
Statistics tell us that one worker dies every 99 minutes from a work-related injury. And put simply, it’s your job to make sure that doesn’t happen at your company or on your work site.
Many companies getting safety and compliance management wrong
However, many consultants and compliance officers are getting it all wrong. Perhaps they’re doing once, maybe twice a year safety training for their workers, and that’s it. That’s where their safety and compliance management efforts end. No discussion of specifics, no pointing out of hazards, no planned audits, and no advanced planning or process established.
This is where a robust, process-driven safety and compliance consultancy organization like HealthSafe comes in. Without plenty of advanced planning, and a strict process in place for anticipating, avoiding, and mitigating safety and compliance issues, in-house compliance managers are doomed to fail before they start.
We practice an innovative and rigorous safety and improvement cycle, and this cycle makes our process unique and successful and is a powerful differentiator for us. Let us share with you seven components of our safety improvement process, which is always characterized by comprehensive follow-up at each step.
The Seven Steps of a Strong Safety Improvement Process
Step 1: Process
“Process” requires you to begin at the beginning. To outline your specific safety goals, identify tasks that are needed on the job site, and create a process map that will guide you through the rest of the safety improvement cycle. This is the “ideal state” of things, and it will be the measuring stick we use in preparing the upcoming components of the safety improvement cycle.
Step 2: Audits/Evaluations
That which can be quantified can be measured. Therefore, the next step in the safety improvement process is to have our talented and experienced safety consultants conduct a thorough audit of the processes identified in the “Process” phase. Are we doing what we say we should be doing? Are we following OSHA requirements? Are we in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations?
Step 3: Safety Program Implementation
Once we’ve created our process map and evaluated how well we’re following it today, the next step is for our certified safety professionals to craft a custom safety improvement program tailored specifically for your organization. This will become the roadmap with which we will help you achieve your site safety compliance and management goals.
Step 4: Talent Safety Management
In many cases, the implementation of the safety improvement program requires on-site safety consultants to assist you with successful and safe execution. We will then supply you with dedicated safety professionals on your job, and while they’ll be w-2 employees for Healthsafe, they’ll generally spend around 85-90% of their time in the field working closely with all of your organization’s stakeholders.
Step 5: Employee Involvement
Reviewing the safety program with your employees ensure that you get the proper feedback you need to enhance your program. It also ensures your employees are clear about how their actions and their job impacts the rest of the organization from a safety and compliance perspective.
Step 6: Training
Remember how we said earlier that many companies simply train their employees in safety measures and compliance once or twice a year and then stop? You’ll notice that employee training is actually step #6 in our process instead of step one. We train early and often so that workers have the full knowledge and understanding of the safety program and can execute safe practices in their day-to-day jobs.
Step 7: Follow-Up
At each stage of the safety program, we are following up with the outcomes and action items from the previous step of the cycle. This rigorous attention to proper follow-ups is a differentiating factor for HealthSafe, and it’s one of the biggest reasons our process is so wildly successful.
The cycle starts over again – and never ends
We revisit the “Process” and ensure all possible processes are captured. We then revise the safety improvement plan based on the new findings from the “Process” portion of the cycle. And then, we continue throughout the cycle in a never-ending, end-to-end approach to safety and compliance.
